An after school program held at Paremata School
Children - Art - Recreation - Technology - Education - Resilience
The focus of C.A.R.T.E.R ACTIVE is teaching kids school values, life skills and resilience through activity.
Monday - Thursday
Paremata School - 3.00pm - 5.30pm
C.A.R.T.E.R. ACTIVE starts with a sports theme for active learners and those who want to learn the fundamentals of sport or just need a good run around before heading home. We intend to expand to include art, technology and education, in addition to sport.
C.A.R.T.E.R. ACTIVE is a programme that has been created to meet the needs of families, and children in particular. It is a concept developed by Phil Roache, who has been coaching and teaching children through sport and activity for the last 25 years. Phil is passionate about keeping children active and teaching them life skills, values and respect through activity.
As a parent and grandparent, Phil recognised a gap in programmes offered to children who are still at school. There are plenty of programmes that offer activity, entertainment and supervision of children but there are not many programmes that focus on values, life skills and leadership - while still offering a fun and active programme.
Families are also experiencing more pressure with full time work and family commitments that include ushering children around to their chosen activities and then back home for homework, dinner and hopefully some down time before bed. Why not have those activities offered at after school programmes and then families can spend their full evenings together with reduced pressure?
C.A.R.T.E.R. ACTIVE intends to use sport (recreation) and eventually, art, technology, and education to help children to build resilience and learn to empathise and work with others by learning:
· Team work
· How to win and lose
Through mentoring and coaching we will help your child to identify their strengths and use those strengths to help build up other children and to identify areas where they can improve and grow.
Our intention is to link in with local colleges and recruit year 11, 12 and 13 students to work alongside your children and mentor and coach them in one or more of the areas above.
At this time Paremata School has made their field and indoor hall available for the C.A.R.T.E.R. ACTIVE sport programme. We hope to secure a facility where we can offer music lessons, singing, drama, art and literature, cooking, budgeting and meal planning, technology: how to keep safe; how to code, reading and maths recovery and basic software such as Microsoft office suite and Google suite.
Once we have determined interest and secured a facility we will roll out the remainder of the programme.
Phil has been a player and a coach in the following sport codes: Rugby; Rugby League; Basketball; Volleyball and Netball (indoor and outdoor). Phil has been a General Manager and Development Manager for Wellington Rugby League and has contracted to New Zealand Rugby League for youth competitions, women’s competitions and Kiwi’s Rugby League World Campaigns as a Manager, Liaison officer, selector and support staff. Phil is a qualified junior and senior coach, trainer and manager and holds a comprehensive first aid certificate.
Phil has coached school level Rugby, Rugby League and Netball at primary and secondary level. In addition, Phil introduced Leadership through League throughout the Wellington Region from Wairarapa to Otaki including Wellington City; Porirua and the Hutt Valley.
This programme included primary and secondary schools. The objective of the programme was to teach secondary students the fundamentals of Rugby League and then support them to teach primary students through mentoring and coaching, all while teaching values and life skills through leadership.
You may recognise Phil as a parent/grandparent who often attends school trips, coaches netball for Paremata school and is a support for many of the sporting events that Paremata School initiates.
If you think your child and your family could benefit from participating in C.A.R.T.E.R. ACTIVE, please enrol and we can give it a go!
